Before you decide if you should use a server console switch or not, you should be sure that you know what it is. This type of switch is basically just a box that connects all of your servers with your main computer terminal. There are multiple plugs in the back and you can hook the servers to the box with Ethernet cables. This gives the one computer the ability to access all of the servers -- and all of the important information that is stored on them -- at one time. These are most useful in businesses and school, though they have other applications as well.

One benefit is that you can allow all of your employees to share files and documents this way. They can all use their office computers to get into the main network and transfer the files back and forth. It is probably not a good idea to allow them to access the hard drives on the other computers, but you can create a central directory where they can store or pick up files that need to be shared.

Another benefit of a server console switch is that your IT Team can easily get into the servers to do maintenance work. They do not have to leave their offices, but can all get into the system and work together. Since you do not want to lose money at your business while the network is down, it is of extreme importance that you have the servers set up in a way that gives the IT Team easy access.

Finally, a switch is useful because it saves you the time and hassle of hooking up to the different servers individually. This is what you would have to do without the switch. Not only would this take a lot of time, but also it would mean that the IT Team would have to go down into the server room -- for huge networks, these rooms can be completely filled with computers and it would be nearly impossible to work in those conditions.

In the end, a server console switch is necessary if you want to run a good, solid network. You need to have it to make the network run as well as possible with as few problems as possible. Since computers have become so intrinsic to businesses and schools in the modern day, having a poor network can lead directly to a loss of revenue -- if the network goes down, many businesses can no longer function. A switch will not prevent these problems, but it will allow you and your IT Team to take all of the proper steps to prevent and repair the problems that come along.
