A multi-user network requires a server console switch to monitor and control different computers on the network. This allows the administrator to manage the network from a single location. Most businesses with secure networks employ this type of hardware. There are many applications for a server console switch from major business network administration to home automation.

The server console switch is basically a box with ports for different hardware input. It is used with a secure console server to control other computers on a network from a remote location. The input ports on the switch are for the video, keyboard, and mouse as well as ports for each network terminal. The user attaches a monitor and input devices to the console switch then uses these to monitor and manipulate any other computer that is hooked into the network. This allows an IT manager to make changes for another user without having to go to that person's office. In the cases of large companies with multiple offices, this is a necessity so that the IT section can work without needing to run all over a building or drive to different locations. Another common business application is in restaurants where the staff can type orders into various computer stations, which will relay them to a central terminal. This type of use can be applied to much retail business, as well. There is no limit to its uses.

Business is not the only application for this hardware, however. Classrooms manage their computer labs with them. A teacher can use this technology to demonstrate a concept on the student's terminal without leaving her own workstation. People with computer-based home entertainment systems often employ them as well. By plugging the components into the switch, one can turn on and control the stereo and television as well as cable or DVD players from one spot in the house. Server console switches can also be used in homes with many other high tech electronics. Automated appliances, security systems, and light systems might be controlled centrally with a server switch. Anything that is managed by a server can be controlled with a server switch.

There are many different types of server console switches due to the variety of applications. A simple one will have the basic ports for input and output devices for connecting only a few terminals. There are also more robust versions used to connect several terminals. A larger server room that employs many console servers will use larger switches to connect these units, as well. Switches on the console control some devices and some are manipulated through keyboard commands. As technology improves, even more options will be available. For this reason, it is important for a network manager to asses the needs of the network and number of users before choosing a server console switch.
